Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) has secured a $57.8m contract to carry out planning in support of modernization and maintenance for the US Navy’s Los Angeles-class submarine, USS Columbus. This contract will include the restoration and maintenance of the ship’s tanks, propulsion systems, hull structure, armament, and furnishings. If all the options are exercised on the contract, the total value will be expected to reach $288 million. The project is scheduled to be complete in May 2019.
Jim Hughes, the vice president of Newport News Shipbuilding Submarines and Fleet Support stated,
"Modernization and maintenance of our nation's submarines is vital to the readiness of our Navy partner. We look forward to doing our part to provide these services with the highest quality, on budget and on schedule."
The Los Angeles-class submarines have been equipped with a vertical missile system including twelve launch tubes and are fitted with a Raytheon CS Mark 2 combat data system. The Los Angeles-class program started in 1982. As technology improved, the Raytheon CCS Mark 2 combat data system was replaced with the Raytheon AB/BYG-1 combat Control System which is also able to be fitted and used on the Navy’s Seawolf and Virginia classes. Prolific on a number of naval platforms, the Raytheon AN/BYG-1 Combat Control System was also fitted on the Australian Collins-class submarines as well.
With range up to 450 km, the submarine is very well armed for both land attack and well as anti-ship missions. The land attack weapons have a range of 2,500km while the anti-ship Tomahawk missiles use a Tercom Aided Intertial Navigation System to reach altitudes of up to 100m. The Los Angeles-class submarine also carries the Harpoon anti-ship missile which has a range is 130km and high subsonic speed.
