Finmeccanica and Fincantieri have teamed up and secured a contract from the Italian Navy to add an extra ship to its contract for multi-mission vessels from Italian industry-taking the total contract order to seven ships. The original six-ship order, signed in May, envisaged four options. The seventh vessel constituted one of the options, but would be built at the same time as the original orders, the firms said.
In addition to the seven PPAs, the deal also plans for the construction of one logistic support unit (LSS or Logistic Support Ship), and one multi-purpose amphibious unit (LHD or Landing Helicopter Dock) -both already contractualized, the latter one through a public contract with the Italian Ministry of Defence.
The contracts assigned to RTI therefore reach a total amount of approx. 5.4 billion euros - Fincantieri’s share amounts to roughly 3.6 billion euros and Finmeccanica’s portion to roughly 1.8 billion euros. The award of the operative contracts regarding the first tranche of the multi-year program for the renewal of the Navy’s Fleet (known as the "Defence Act") is thus completed.
Fincantieri has a rich history in the naval vessel industry. The firm counts over 2,000 vessels built for the Italian Navy and many foreign navies. Fincantieri is able to design and build a wide range of surface ships, aircraft carriers, frigates, corvettes, patrol vessels, support ships, and submarines.
The company is the reference partner of the Italian Navy for the design, construction and logistical support of the surface fleet and submarines in addition to boasting a consolidated relationship with other state bodies. Fincantieri has well-proven products, which provide high operating standards alongside optimized costs thanks to the use of design and construction solutions tried and tested in the merchant field.
In addition to building the vessels at its shipyards, Fincantieri will provide support over the lifecycle of the vessels for the first ten years, through the supply of logistic services (training courses, spare parts, technical documentation) during the construction of the vessels and of ISS or In Service Support (maintenance services). These services will be carried out during post-delivery operations. Components and naval machinery produced by the Marine Systems and Components Unit, such as shaft lines, wheelhouse, maneuvering propellers, fin stabilizers, handling systems, automation systems and a part of the special supplies for PPAs manufactured by the subsidiary Seastema S.p.A. will be delivered under the contract.
