USS Fort Worth Resumes Operations after Undergoing Scheduled Maintenance

The Lockheed Martin-produced USS Fort Worth has finally completed its five-day preventative maintenance availability (PMAV) along with two-week long repair availability (RAV). The work was completed at the maintenance and logistics hub in Singapore and was the very first extended maintenance availability for the vessel as it journeyed on a 16-month rotational deployment to the Indo-Pacific region. These maintenance periods will allow the ship to continue its trek in theater for the bulk of its lengthy deployment which will include employing the surface warfare (SUW) mission package.

With a length of 390 feet, a beam of 58 feet, and a draft of 13 feet, the USS Fort Worth (LCS 3) is one of 60 LCS ships used by the United States Navy. The ship was commissioned on September 22, 2012 and is named after Fort Worth, Texas-the 17th largest city in the United States and the 5th largest city in Texas.

The USS Fort Worth sports the following features:

  • 1 x Mk 110 57mm gun
  • 21 x Rim 116 Rolling Airframe Missiles
  • 2 x .50 caliber machine guns
  • 2 x 30 mm Bushmaster guns (w/ SUW Mission Module)
  • 2 x MH-60 R/S Seahawk helicopters

Ships such as the USS Fort Worth are designed specifically to satisfy an urgent requirement for shallow draft vessels that operate in coastal waters. Known as littoral combat ships (LCS), these vessels are the first of a new family of ships for the United States Navy. The LCS takes its design as a specialized variant of the US surface combat ships known as DD(X) and are used as counter measures from possible threats such as coastal mines and quiet diesel submarines. There are two primary classes of LCS variants known as the Freedom-class and Independence-class, both of which are smaller than the United States Navy’s guided missile frigates. Their design allows for small assault transport, 2 capacities Seahawk helicopter housing (SH-60 or MH-60), small boat transportation, and fighting vehicle deployment.
