Northrop Grumman Starts Work on $267M Navy SEWIP Block 3 Contract
Headquartered in West Falls Church, Virginia, the Northrop Grumman Corporation is the 5th-largest aerospace and defense technology company. It concentrates in the production of aircraft carriers, military aircraft and vessels, missile defense systems, satellites, and information technology. It was formed in 1994 when Northrop purchased Grumman.
In March 2015, the United States Navy announced that they have awarded Northrop Grumman with a USD$267 million contract to develop and manufacture the next-generation Surface Electronic Warfare Improvement Program (SEWIP) Block 3. The contract calls for Northrop Grumman to significantly improve the shipboard AN/SLQ-32 electronic warfare system. Northrop Grumman's AN/SLQ-32(V) 1 was launched in 1974. Since then, the company has served as the prime integrator and has developed and delivered every version upgrade of the system.
The company is very excited for their partnership with the Navy. Teri Marconi, Northrop Grumman Navigation and Maritime Systems Division vice-president and general manager, said it a statement:
"We are proud to be the Navy's selected partner to safeguard sailors in defense of freedom for our nation and its allies."
New technologies that will be incorporated into the system include capabilities for early detection, signal analysis, threat warning, and protection from anti-ship missiles. Other features of the SEWIP Block 3 solution include active and passive arrays, as well as electronic warfare and communications functions with continuous 360° coverage.
