Boeing Delivers First Modernized RTCASS-D System to Navy and USMC

Boeing has delivered the first modernized RTCASS-D system to the United States Navy and US Marine Corps.

The new device, which is known as the Re-configurable Transportable Consolidated Automated Support System – Depot, is used for servicing military aircraft and troubleshooting electronic systems. It is used on aircraft such as the F/A-18 Hornet and Super Hornet, V-22 Osprey, and AV-8B Harrier. It is one of ten units that are being upgraded in hopes of making aircraft maintenance smoother and simpler.

They have lowered the testing costs for the Navy and Marines by combining the depot level testing into one single facility. It will also see an increase in efficiency and put the equipment they already have to good use.

“These upgraded test stations support our customers' depot-level readiness targets and missions while saving them time and money,” Boeing RTCASS program manager Tim Murphy said of the upgrade. "As the Navy works to consolidate its depot-level mission operations with the Boeing-built testers, we look forward to helping the service meet its increased performance and mobility requirements.”

The RTCASS is described as the Marine Corps specific test set within the CASS standard automatic test equipment family. It provides intermediate support to all branches of the US military, as well as foreign allies. There are 164 stations used by the Marines and other customers.

“RTCASS-D is the first CASS-family tester designed and built exclusively for depot applications,” said Sam Winters, CASS/RTCASS integrated product team lead, PMA-260, Naval Air Systems Command. “The enhanced capabilities in this system allow Fleet Readiness Centers to offload test program sets from legacy testers cheaper and more quickly than ever before while also leveraging hundreds of test program sets previously built for CASS.”

The three versions of the RTCASS are Basic, High Power, and Depot. The RCTASS-D will be installed in US Navy fleet repair centers sometime next year – the date has not yet been determined.
