Baldwin Filters - Innovative Filters for Controlled Release Coolant Products

Baldwin Filters designs filters for numerous heavy-duty, engine applications – including over the road commercial, mining/logging, industrial, agriculture, power generation, and construction markets. Established in 1936, the company now boasts worldwide manufacturing and distributing facilities and was subsumed under CLARCOR’s Mobile & Engine segment in 1981.

Baldwin Filters offers a variety of product lines in the following categories: lube, air, fuel, hydraulic, coolant, cabin air, and DAHL. The DAHL system is unique in its ability to simultaneous remove water from a diesel system in addition to filtering contaminants from the fuel. This system features a functional dual-chamber, 3-stage diesel fuel/water separator. Using their patented depressurizer cone, the fuel is spread over a greater area and experiences less mechanical flow resistance. Most solid contaminants are removed by the cone even before reaching the filter. This system (with their Marine units 75, 100-M, 150-M, 200-M, 200-MMV, 300-M, and 300-MMV) meets the requirements for high-performance environments, including the U.S. Coast Guard’s regulations for Marine Applications and tests for fire endurance, vibration fatigue, impact and thermal shock.

The company’s filters are widely used in the land-based oil and gas industry. In this rigorous and demanding environment, the company’s filters have been proven useful in fracking applications (including frac blenders, sand storage units, frac pumpers, data monitoring trucks, sand trucks, and chemical storage trucks) and in extraction applications (offering hydraulic filters, bulk fluid filtration systems, and bulk reservoir tank breathers).

Filters are essential in extending the life of engine equipment and other power generators. Early 20th century air filters used to rely on oil-impregnated steel or oil bath filters with an oil pan to trap contaminants. Although effective, these devices became quickly flooded and were difficult to change and clean. The predominant type of filter in this modern age consists of paper filters, or disposable pleated media. Baldwin Filters, with a vertically-integrated production process, makes and designs its own components.

With an engineering team using cutting-edge technology such as 3D CAD modeling and stereo lithographic prototyping, the company holds a number of patents for their media and filters and even complete filtration systems. One such innovation is the company’s advanced technology ProTura® nanofiber media. ProTura is composed of nanofiber bonded to cellulose media in a lattice structure which is able to capture and collect particles on its surface, eventually disposing it into a housing ejector. In environments requiring high performance, ProTura’s tiny fibers (about 90 nanometers in diameter) capture micro-contaminants while still allowing a free flow of air.
