SPAWAR Extends Comtech Contract for ATIP Program

The US Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) has awarded Comtech Telecommunications’ subsidiary Comtech EF Data with a contract extension. The contract is valued at $4 million and calls for Comtech to deliver additional advanced time division multiple access (TDMA) interface processor (ATIP) production terminals. The original agreement was signed in April 2013 and required the delivery of an ATIP Layer-2 Ethernet bridging device to replace the Navy’s legacy TDMA interface processor. Comtech completed delivery of the initial contract earlier this year. SPAWAR has already funded $24.9 million of the $40.2 million total potential contract value for this program.

The Advance TIP (ATIP) system in an updated version of TIP and will provide higher data rates. The ATIP will provide transparent bridging capabilities among internet protocol users that are geographically distributed and connected through Milstar medium data rate (MDR), advanced extremely high-frequency MDR/extended data rate (XDR) or enhanced polar XDR links. The system will be equipped aboard ship, shore, and submarine platforms in the Navy multiband terminal (NMT). This bridging function builds upon the capability originally provided by the Legacy TDMA Interface Processor (TIP). The ATIP program will provide significant improvements to the Advanced Extremely High Frequency system’s performance through dynamic bandwidth management.  Next year, Comtech will deliver an Adaptive Coding capability to further improve the AEHF system’s performance.
