Cobham to Develop Next-Generation Explosive Detection System for US Army
A team at Cobham has just been awarded a contract by the US Army to develop next-generation technologies that are able to detect landmines and other explosive devices hidden in the ground. The $4.15 million agreement will allot Cobham 3 years to develop the new technology, and it will result in a highly specialized handheld mine detector. This new device will offer the Army a unique system with increased capabilities beyond what current systems can do today.
Work under this contract will be fulfilled at Cobham Antenna Systems business unit locations at Leatherhead and Marlow, England. Also, the entire project will be overseen by the Army’s Communications-Electronic Research Development and Engineering Command.
Tom Garvey, Vice President and General Manager of Cobham Antenna Systems, explained:
As a result of this program, Cobham will deliver enhanced handheld Counter-Explosive Hazard detection systems for evaluation. The continued need for protection of US forces against buried threats is a key priority and this contract will allow Cobham to build on the considerable capability offered by the current MINEHOUND family of detectors, as it develops next-generation systems. Cobham has adapted its advanced technology for the most demanding military environments and requirements, and these detectors form part of an extensive portfolio provided by Cobham which protect lives and livelihoods.
For this project, Cobham will likely expand upon its already successful Vallon MINEHOUND VMR series of mine detectors. The VMR series combines high-performance Cobham Ground Penetrating Radar with a Vallon Metal Detector. The Vallon MINEHOUND Series was designed to deliver top of the line Counter-IED capabilities for the most rigorous military requirements.
