Boeing to Provide USAF with Combat Survivor Evader Locator Radios

The United States Air Force (USAF) has awarded Boeing with a lucrative USD$9.7 million contract for the delivery of Combat Survivor Evader Locator (CSEL) radios.

In addition to the 54,000 already in use, the new deal calls for 336 CSEL radios to be added.

Boeing CSEL program manager Steve Capps took pride in the deal, saying, "CSEL radios save lives, so we are honored to support the US military with this continued production."

The new radios will be the most up-to-date model, which includes a non-GPS beacon and secure texting capabilities. Base station upgrades will improve the communication, along with providing greater network and information protection speeds by modernizing the hardware and software.

Boeing Company holds the radio in high esteem, stating “The Combat Survivor Evader Locator (CSEL) is the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Program of Record for Joint Search and Rescue. This fully qualified, next-generation survival radio system is comprised of over-the-horizon relays, ground, and user equipment segments for the joint services. Today, CSEL is providing global coverage for U.S. DoD forces worldwide.”

The CSEL radio is extremely durable and useful in many conditions. Some of its features include:

  • Rugged, Tested IAW MIL-STD-810
  • 26 drops from 4 feet to concrete
  • -20°C to +55°C Operating Temperature Range
  • 10 meter immersion
  • 32 ounces (38 ounces with rechargeable battery)

The US Military uses the global CSEL communication system help in the rescue efforts of downed pilots and other military members who are in peril. CSEL cuts down on the search effort of those in need when a user transmits position, location and situational information via line-of-sight two-way voice and data, beacon, or over-the-horizon communication paths.

Unlike many other survival radios which are only effective when the target is in your line-of-sight, the CSEL is able to work around these problems with all the different transmission options, thus revolutionizing the search and rescue procedure and keeping our military members safe.
