Boeing Lands Contract to Provide the Next Air Force One

The Boeing Company is an American global designer and manufacturer of airplanes, rotorcraft, rockets, and satellites. It also provides leasing and product support services to a multi-national customer base. Boeing is among the largest global aircraft manufacturers, is the second-largest defense contractor in the world based on reported 2013 revenue, and is the largest exporter in the United States by dollar value.

Just this week, the United States Air Force announced that they have chosen Boeing to be the sole source provider and prime integrator for the multi-billion dollar program to develop the next U.S. presidential transport, based on their 747-8 aircraft. This new version is the latest and largest of the classic Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet and will serve as the president’s aircraft for the next 30 years.

The decision comes as no surprise, as Boeing has over 50 years of experience in this mission area and is the only viable U.S. manufactured aircraft that is capable of supporting the array of sensors and electronics on the new Air Force One. A fleet of three of these aircraft will replace the current VC-25 aircraft which has become obsolete. The 2016 fiscal budget, expected to be released on February 2nd, will outline a clear plan for the project’s funding. The fiscal 2015 plan included USD$1.6 billion for the first five years of research and development and buying the first airframe. Boeing Company is expected to deliver the first 747-8 aircraft for modification in 2018.
