Huntington Ingalls Receives $3.35B Contract for Construction of Gerald R. Ford-Class Aircraft Carrier John F. Kennedy
Huntington Ingalls Industries has been awarded a $3.35 billion contract for the detailed design and construction of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy. The contract work calls for ship construction, ship design activities, engineering services, procurement of aviation materials and hardware to support construction and logistics activities.
In addition, Huntington Ingalls Industries also received a $941 million modification to an existing construction preparation contract to continue material procurement and manufacturing in support of the ship. The work will be performed at the company's Newport News Shipbuilding division. Since 2010, the company constructed more than 450 of 1,100 structural units of the vessel under a construction preparation contract. The keel-laying ceremony for the vessel is scheduled for August 2015.
The John F. Kennedy is the second carrier in the Ford class. With the first cut of steel commemorated in 2011, the ship is currently planned for construction in the Newport News Shipbuilding division. The Ford class is designed to decrease necessary upkeep by 30 percent over the previous class of carriers. Each ship in the new class is estimated to save the US Navy approximately $4 billion in operational costs over its 50 year life. The new class is also intended to produce 25 percent more sorties (flight missions) per day on its 5 acre flight deck. Weighing nearly 100,000 tons, the John F. Kennedy will be capable of reaching speeds in excess of 35 knots.
Huntington Ingalls Industries is America's largest military shipbuilding company and a provider of manufacturing, engineering and management services to the nuclear energy, oil and gas markets. HII's Newport News and Ingalls shipbuilding divisions in Virginia and Mississippi have built more ships in more ship classes than any other U.S. naval shipbuilder. The company is headquartered in Newport News, Virginia. HII employs approximately 38,000 people both domestically and internationally.
