UTC Aerospace Systems Receives $39M Navy Contract

UTC Aerospace Systems has received a USD$39 million US Navy contract to supply surface ship sonar domes for the branch’s Oliver Hazard-class frigates and Arleigh Burke-class destroyers.

Terms of the contract state that it runs until 2020, and the quantity and delivery is undefined. The contract also calls for UTC to provide shipping, installation and transportation fixtures, engineering and field services, inspection and repairs.

The sonar domes they are providing are acoustically transparent housings that surround the sonar transducer array used for detection, navigation, and ranging. It permits acoustic energy to pass through with minimal sound transmission interference.

The two types of sonar drones UTC will provide are a sonar composite drone (SCD) and a sonar dome rubber window (SDRW).

An Oliver Hazard-class frigate is designed as an escort vessel. Some of its specifications include:

• Displacement: 4,100 long tons (4,200 t)
• Length: 453 ft (138 m)
• Beam: 45 ft (14 m)
• Draft: 22 ft (6.7 m)
• Speed: 29 knots (33 mph; 54 km/h)
• Range: 5,000 nmi (9,300 km; 5,800 mi) at 18 knots (21 mph; 33 km/h)

The Arleigh Burke-class destroyer is a bit bigger:

• Flight I: 8,315 t (8,184 long tons; 9,166 short tons)
• Length: 505 ft (154 m) (Flights I and II)
• Beam: 66 ft (20 m)
• Draft: 5 ft (9.3 m)
• Speed: In excess of 30 knots (56 km/h; 35 mph)
• Range: 4,400 nmi (8,100 km) at 20 kn (37 km/h; 23 mph)
