NAVSEA Awards Harris $113m AN/SPS-48E Radar Upgrade Contract
The US Navy Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) has awarded Harris Corporation with a $113 million radar upgrade contract. The contract is split into an initial order of $39 million along with three 1-year options that will be sent in 2016. This radar is considered a primary long-range, three-dimensional radar.
This contract will be used to upgrade the AN/SPS-48E radars to the very advanced SPS-48G under the Navy's Radar Obsolescence and Availability Recovery (ROAR) program. This advanced radar will be a modern solid-state transmitter which allows the Navy to be more prepared for more threats. Not only are they able to prepare for more threats, but the Navy is also able to reduce the total cost of radar ownership as this radar is highly effective.
Rich Sorelle, President of Harris Electronic Warfare business units, commented on the SPS-48 radar: The SPS-48 radar provides an essential surveillance capability for the U.S. Navy, which faces growing and increasingly more complex threats. The radar is expected to remain in operation through the year 2050, and Harris is committed to ensuring it remains effective and dependable throughout its service life.
The AN/SPS-48G can be installed on CVN, LHA, LHD, and LPD 17 class ships. It is capable of finding full volumetric detection data for cooperative engagement capability, ships self-defense systems, air intercept control, back up aircraft marshaling, anti-ship cruise missile detection, and hazardous weather detection and display capability.
Once the radar is installed, it is permanently lodged and is no longer transportable. The radar has a built-in track management system such as the Cooperative Engagement Capability or AN/SYS-2 Integrated Automated Detection and Tracking.
