Heron TP-XP Marks Emergence of Export Versions

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has been working on developing a new aircraft with export-specific capabilities. It will be in display at this month’s Aero India show taking place in Bengaluru. The concept of its designs originates from the Heron TP, an aircraft that has been part of both the Israeli and German air force for years now.

The design was based on the restrictions of the international MTCR 2 agreement. The original Heron TP design was modified to reduce its payload capacity. It went from 1t to 450kg. Even with the reduction in payload capacity, The Israel Aerospace Industries thinks this new Heron TP-XP defines what it means to be a “multi-mission, multi-payload strategic aircraft.” It can also operate in harsh weather conditions, making it as reliable as previous models.

The Indian Army had also requested the Heron 1 UAV, a smaller model of the aircraft family. New Dehli had also shown interest on obtaining the Heron TP because of its reliability.

The Israeli manufacturer hopes to extend their partnership with Indian partners under the “Make in India” policy, and the Heron TP-XP is a strong way to execute this, as it will begin the emergence of export versions of other aircrafts.
