DCNS Begins Construction on Egyptian Navy’s First Gowind 2500 Corvette

DCNS has started construction of the first Gowind 2500 corvette for the Egyptian Navy. In June 2014, DCNS outbid Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems and the Dutch Damen Schelde group for the four-ship contract. In addition to the ships, DCNS will also provide their expertise on the construction of three modernized corvettes and through-life support for a FREMM frigate that will be equally up-to-date. The first Gowind ship for the Egyptian Navy will be built in Lorient while the remaining three units will be built in Alexandria.

The Gowind family of corvettes was first introduced by DCNS in 2006. Since then, the Gowind family has increased to four corvettes off differing lengths and displacement. The corvette family includes: the 1,000t Sovereignty Enforcer Gowind control corvette, the 2,000t High Seas Master Gowind presence corvette, the Deterrent Warrior Gowind action corvette, and the 2,000t Multi-Mission Combatant Gowind combat corvette. Each of the ships is constructed out of a sea-proven monohull design and is made to accommodate 50-to-75 crew and passengers. Reaching maximum speeds of 22kt to 27kt, corvettes have the strength to run for two to three weeks on missions. The Gowind has the ability to deploy Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Unmanned Surface Vehicles, and Underwater Unmanned Vehicles. Currently, there are 6 units under construction with 10 units planned on being built.
